Notes:
The final piece of our lake management program is drawing down the dam each winter.
The maintenance of the dam was really the original purpose of the FPC, when it was founded in 1939. Frances Homer Foster could no longer keep up with the dam, and he turned to property-owners around the pond to take over the task.
Winter drawdowns used to be a regular experience on the Pond. In the forties, the dam actually had a pipe and a valve that allowed the pond to be drawn down several feet - enough that you could drive a truck out into parts of the main pond and yank up tree stumps.
But that valve was last used about 40 years ago, and the pond hadn't been drawn down until we restored the sluiceway in 2005.
