Now look at that far wall. Those giant foundation blocks have disappeared. Where's the apron in from of the spillway? And what happened to that concrete platform between the spillway and the sluiceway. That's why we have a drawdown - to accommodate this much spring run-off.
In the foreground, you can see another safety feature of the dam. That gently sloping incline up to the Pond, the one that visitors use to launch canoes and bass boats, is actually the dam's emergency spillway. Another six inches of water in the Pond and it would have started flowing over this emergency spillway, preventing an overtopping event. Rattlesnake Hill Road, at the foot of the dam, would become impassable - but that's actually a good thing, since it would keep people away from the most hazardous place to stand in really bad flooding conditions.
